Magnetic Water Softeners

Magnetic Water Softeners

Most water softening products soften water by using an ionic filtering system that replaces the culprits of hard water magnesium and calcium, with purified salt. Although this method of water softening is highly effective, some people are looking for an alternative for this work. Depending on the amount of water used in a house, the amount of salt used may be significant. Over time this could translate into a great expense. In addition, although the amount of salt added to the water is insignificant, people who need to reduce their salt intake may want a salt free alternative for drinking water. These two problems alone have added to the popularity of magnetic water softeners used for homes.

The main premise behind magnetic based water softeners is to prevent the effects of hard water from occurring within the pipes by releasing an electric current onto the hard water as it is filtered through a field of magnetic electricity. Magnets are attached to the main water pipe and the water heater. The number of magnets that are attached is dependent on the pipes’ composition. Basically, you use fewer magnets if the pipes are made of non-magnetic material.

There main disadvantages associated with using magnetic based water softeners is that it doesn't remove the magnesium and calcium ions and actually lower the water hardness. There are not much research results that prove that water softeners which use magnetic filtering are actually effective in softening water. The information is that magnetic softeners are regarded by many as right out scams as cheaper alternative to the traditional water softeners. Another disadvantage is that there is the possibility of experiencing interference from other high voltage cables in the surrounding area.

The main advantages that magnetic water softener have over traditional methods are cost and maintenance. Traditional methods range in price from $500 to $5,000, while magnetic softeners cost around $250 (about $49/magnet). With traditional water softeners there is a maintenance and troubleshooting service factor. You have to replace the salt on a regular basis and there is the expense associated with the system having to be regenerated. Once a magnetic softener equipment is installed, you do not have to do anything else to the system or repair it.

Another advantage that magnetic systems have over traditional water softeners methods is that the system doesn’t require any chemicals or salt to be added to the water or the use of any operating moving parts.
